5/29 It may look like a thoroughbred rally car, but the Mazda2 rally machine is essentially a roadgoing hatchback with a roll cage and some of the biggest spotlights you’ll ever see. 4/29 Mazda RX-7 race car that won the 19 Bathurst endurance production car races. "But there are no plans for a production car."ġ/29 Wind it up and watch it go 2/29 MAzda 3/29 From Bathurst-winning RX-7 and potent RX-8 SP turbo to the fun 2 rally car and surprisingly tweaked 3 MPS, Mazda unleashed the media on its range of motorsport heroes at Wakefield Park race track. "If someone wants one to race, we'll build it," Horsley says.

Unfortunately, there are no plans for a production model. The RX-8 may be nearing the end of its life but a turbocharged engine would be a great farewell present. Still, it was enough to sample the racing life for a few laps. The racing seats could slide forward and rearward but my frame was a fraction bigger than Glenney's, so slipping into the more sculpted pew was a challenge. Getting comfortable was my biggest challenge. That said, the brakes team with the sticky tyres to ensure short, confident stops with a supple but meaty pedal feel. The RX-8 SP continues its go-faster mantle in other facets.īrakes are powerful, although the anti-lock system that's usually disabled in competitive events can be trigger-happy during heavy stops. Glenney was running second in the 2010 event - ahead of numerous Porsches, Lamborghinis and far more exotic machinery - only to end in a ball of crumpled panels following an unavoidable crash when another competitor parked on the racing line.

"It's about torque for driving out of corners," says the vehicle's driver in the Targa Tasmania event and other tarmac rallies, Steve Glenney. We've been instructed to change gears at 7000rpm for what is a test drive, not a timed shoot-out. The power delivery continues throughout the rev range, punching harder as revs build. While the regular RX-8 loves a rev, this one surges happily out of what would usually be a second-gear corner in third gear. Rather than the stratospheric revs that characterise most rotaries, the engine is all about mid-range urge and quickly building speed in taller gears. Even with the sticky, semi-slick racing tyres, it's enough to provoke some wheelspin out of slower corners. The result is a transformation of the character of the ageing RX-8, adding some serious bite to its playful bark.įrom even low revs, the engine pulls strongly, quickly building speed with a meaningful thrust back into the seat. Somewhere north of 300kW seems to be the estimate. The manager of Mazda Motorsport, Allan Horsley, is coy about the exact output, only admitting it is significantly quicker. But instead of the modest 170kW of power from the sweet, high-revving engine, the addition of the turbo means it is producing about double that. The standard twin-rotor 1.3-litre engine remains. If the signage on the outside or additional SP badges don't give it away, then the roll cage, racing fuel tank that takes up most of the boot and larger brakes are obvious signs this car has competed in Targa Tasmania and other tarmac events.īut beneath the bonnet, the RX-8 SP delivers its biggest punch.

Even before you get in, it's obvious the rally-ready Mazda RX-8 SP is different to your average RX-8.
